Whether you want to call it Crystal, or with the official soundtrack of GD900, this mobile phone manufacturer LG Electronics is among the most advanced devices now commercially available: Full Touch screen has a 3-inch, a camera with 8 megapixel resolution and HSDPA allows data transmission at speeds actually incurred.

LG GD900 Crystal network, display and power supply
Do not just mention the operation Quad Band GSM to define carefully the advanced nature of the new LG GD900 Crystal, a model developed from the perspective of the connections. In fact, the most interesting are those connected to the third generation in particular, the UMTS network on the frequency of 2100 MHz and HSDPA with a maximum operating speed of 7.2 Mbps To complete the picture of the connectivity is finally available the GPRS protocol. The model uses a battery of standard power lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1000 mAh, which ensure a maximum range of 4 hours talk time and 100 hours in stand-by. Another aspect of considerable interest is linked to the Full Touch screen, 3-inch diagonal, 480×800 pixel resolution and filter for well over 16 million color display.
LG GD900 Crystal design
Although they have a Full Touch screen, with the possibility, therefore, touch control and immediate access to the main menu functions across the screen, LG GD900 Crystal, however, also makes use of an alphanumeric keyboard, which affects their appearance. In particular, the model has a so-called slide-up design, also known as sliding, so the keyboard is revealed at the opening of the device. This phone is also distinguished by the particularly low weight, 127 grams net, and the average size, 105 mm height, 52.5 mm wide, and finally 13.5 mm deep. Black and Silver are the two main hues that characterize LG GD900 Crystal, one for the exterior, the other for the inside and the alphanumeric keypad.

LG GD900 Crystal user review
I’ve reviewed a lot of mobile phones, and after a while they all start to look alike, that was until I got my hands on LG’s latest handset, the LG Crystal GD900, which looks like nothing I’ve ever seen. When you add a range of impressive features including a responsive GLASS keypad, multitouch capability, Wi-Fi and HSDPA connectivity, the GD900 was shaping up to be a great handset.
Design and Features
I have to admit I have new found respect for the normally rather reserved LG design department for trying something completely different with the GD900. The Crystals touchpad is made of tempered glass lit up by a bluish/white glow, which I have to say looks great. Despite the fact that the back of the touchpad is made from flimsy looking plastic, the tempered glass front feels solid and well made.
As well as looking good the GD900’s keypad is also a touch sensitive control pad, allowing you to navigate items with a simple swipe of your finger. Anyone familiar with either the iPhone 3GS or HTC Hero will be aware of the useful multitouch function, which the GD900 utilises on both its 3 inch touchscreen and tempered glass touchpad, allowing you to zoom into pictures or those tiny internet links by pinching your fingers together.
Touch Screen Typing
Some of the touch-sensitive features of the GD900 are very good, in particular the one that LG seem to be most proud of, what they call ‘Gestures’. By drawing a shape on the screen you can launch an application of your choice, your web browser for example. However, while I had the phone the same problem arose time and time again. With two touch screens and almost no buttons there is no surface which doesn’t result in some type of response from the phone, every surface is very, very sensitive, so while drawing my shape to launch the browser I would launch the contact list, dial a number or scroll a few random icons before the browser finally opened.
When I did finally get the browser to open, I was actually quite impressed, due largely to the built in Wi-Fi and 7.2Mbps HSDPA, browsing over 3G allows the GD900 to do an excellent job of rendering even very complex pages. I mentioned the GD900’s pinch function earlier, and while it works, it is no where near a slick as seen on HTC’s Hero or the iPhone 3GS, as it tends to be a little sluggish while using the Crystal’s browser.

The GD900’s touchpad allows you to navigate through all the phones features without obscuring the screen, and when its not needed it just slides away, at first I thought that the GD900’s touchpad was a great idea but after having the handset for about 24 hours I realised that I hardly ever used it, even forgetting about it from time to time. Even when you are browsing web sites crowded with links, there really isn’t any time you would need the touchpad. That was until I tried to use the GD900’s on-screen keypad…
I thought that the over responsive, ticklish nature of the GD900 was going to get very irritating, but one area that is works very well is for composing SMS messages and dialling numbers, which is a very good job because the GD900’s on-screen keypad is among the worst I have ever tested. It was unresponsive and the lag was terrible, as a result so many letters where missed out that text messages where simply a group of erratic and ineligible letters. So I thought I’d try the GD900’s T9 predictive mode… which was even worse; I couldn’t find any way of rejecting the handsets ridiculous and overly complicated suggestions.
User Interface
The GD900 uses LG’s ‘S-Class’ user interface, which I am not a huge fan of. I respect the fact that LG has tried to improve user friendliness, but the S Class user interface seems to me to be a little pointless. I tested the LG Arena a while ago now and like the GD900, it sported the same spinning cube, complete with it own dedicated button – I didn’t see any need for it on the Arena and my opinion hasn’t changed since – LG get rid of the stupid spinning cube… no one cares!
Although the GD900’s multiple home screens are nice, the widgets contained in it aren’t. They demonstrate the lack of computing power, really demonstrating the Crystal’s slightly sluggish nature. I did have some other issues with the GD900’s use of widgets too, they somehow feel unfinished, poorly thought out and poorly designed. The weather widget is a perfect example, I got up the first morning I had the GD900 and the widget had a picture of a bright sun… When I opened the blinds it was poring with rain, it was then I realised that unlike many handsets which incorporate a weather widget, the GD900 displays a bright, shinning sun regardless of the weather, effectively reducing the ‘widget’ to a shortcut, meaning that you have to actually open the application.
While all of LG’s design, feature’s and UI ideas are good in theory, the more that you are forced to actually live with it, the more infuriating they get, and that is before you get to the Crystal’s 8 megapixel camera.

Camera Function
I recently tested the GD900’s older sister, the LG Viewty GC900 and hated it so much that I didn’t even bother to write a review… Without going into too much detail, my main issue with the GC900 was that despite being called the ‘VIEWTY’ it took awful pictures. I bring it up because the GD900 suffers from the same flaw, despite its 8 megapixel camera, it takes rubbish photos!
In poor light conditions the photos were almost unusable, rather than providing extra light the LED flash made everything turn a strange tint of pink, even in good conditions the pictures produced by the GD900 were below average. I freely accept that very few mobile phones have the capability to match the quality of photographs taken by a digital camera, but despite the Crystal’s huge 8 megapixel camera, the quality of its images would leaving it falling behind even the cheapest of compact camera’s.
As with Apple’s hugely popular iPhone, the GD900 has a wide range of editing options for both photos and videos. I found them all very easy to use, and all take full advantage of the touch screen.
As far as onboard memory is concerned, the GD900 has an adequate amount, there is 1.5GB of onboard memory, but this can be further supplemented by a MicroSD memory card, so all in all, there is ample space to store your blurry pictures and stuttery videos…
The Verdict
I liked
- It is unique looking; it is unlike any other handset available
- The responsive glass keypad lets you navigate without obscuring the screen;
- Multitouch capability
- I respect the innovative use of multiple touch screens, even if they aren’t completely successful
- Wi-Fi, HSDPA connectivity produce good 3G browsing
I disliked
- Lacks any real muscle, which means that it can be very sluggish
- Poor widgets
- Although I like the idea of multiple touch screens, in reality, there over sensative nature would be infuriating over time.
- Despite its 8 megapixel camera it takes poor photos/video
Conclusion
The touch screen Crystal’s transparent, touch sensitive, tempered glass touchpad may look nice and make up for the terrible onscreen keypad, but in reality, the inclusion of two touch screens, although a nice idea in theory just doesn’t work.
Despite the inclusion of an 8 megapixel camera, its media capturing capabilities are poor and the S-Class user interface needs to be drastically improved before using the GD900 is a pleasurable experience.
I don’t usually have an issue with mobile phones that have no point, no function other than to look good, I actually quite like the idea of a phone as a fashion accessory, but the GD900 takes it too far, even for me. All the gimmicks have a detrimental effect on its user interface and usability, even the tempered glass isn’t enough to persuade me that I need this handset in my life.

Nokia 6710 Navigator user review
Frankly speaking, I have never paid attention to what kind of cell phone I use as long as it serves me well and I can use it for its main reason – to talk.
Anyway, not long ago I decided it is about time to change my cell phone so I asked a friend of mine for opinion and I was recommended to purchase Nokia 6710 Navigator.
First of all, I decided to get this cell phone mostly because it is a combination of two devices that I want – navigation system and a cell phone. I have to admit there are also very attractive additional accessories when you buy it – 4 GB micro-SD card, vacuum car stand and recharger, hands-free and micro-USB cable. I was also tempted to receive a life-time navigation license which means I will not have pay for navigation license.
At first glance, this phone looks excellent – I mean it is compact and not that heavy as it is expected, and it fits very well in your hand. The slide mechanism looks pretty solid, and what I definitely like most are the buttons – it is very easy to use them even if your hands are sweaty. Other nice attribute is the sensor scaling bar, which I am using for the navigation system and I can assure you, the sensor bar is extremely useful while you are driving. Anyway, it might be also used for pictures and camera applications.

Talking about camera, I have to point out the good quality of the pictures made. I tried making up to 10 different pictures and all came out pretty good. Subsequently, going in the multimedia gallery, it was really easy to go through your pictures by just using the navigation button. On the other hand – the quality of the video is terrible, but I do not need it after all.
The first 2-3 days when I bought it, I was more interested in the phones’ applications, so I spent some time getting familiar with it. Then I discovered that the software is relatively fast and responsive and I did not have any problems. Other feature I like is the Wi-Fi, so now I do not need to bring my laptop with me everywhere. It serves me perfectly for reading or writing e-mails and using Excel and Word applications.
The only negative feature to me is the battery. The first day when I was really excited with this phone and I tried to test everything possible, the battery barely lasted 1 day and a half – so pity! The longest period of using the phone without recharging was 2 days and a half. It is good at least that the phone is constantly recharging while you are driving. If the battery was stronger, that would have been the best phone I have ever used.

Samsung S5620 Halley user review
This is my first Samsung phone after my 5 year old Sony Ericsson broke. My friend got one several weeks previously and recommended it. It looks stylish and fits nicely into your hand, however feels flimsier than other phones I have had. It takes a while if you’ve never had a touchscreen before but once you get the hang of it its easy to lock/unlock although you have to unlock it to check if you have any messages which on my other phones automatically came up. Also the vibrate isn’t that powerful.
I don’t know if this is just my experience but the CDs the phone comes with don’t work so you have to copy/paste photos and music off/onto your PC as you would with a normal memory stick.

The touchscreen is ideal, not over or under sensitive and makes texting much easier than with conventional buttons. Its easy to swap between predictive and normal texting
The camera is very good however doesn’t have a flash (or I havn’t yet found it) which makes it hard to take photos in dim light. It does basically everything: music player, radio, bluetooth, WiFi, emails, Java, useful dictionary. The pre-loaded games and ringtones aren’t that good but you can easily download more although the internet is quite slow however I think that may just be my network.
The display is great plus I like being able to personalise it by changing the font, wallpaper, rearranging the icons and putting the most used features on the main page.
Overall, possibly the best phone I have ever had.

Samsung S8500 Wave user review
Samsung released the first ever Bada powered mobile phone, the Wave. First impressions are good. It comes in a small box, which contains, a user manual, two mini CD’s with drivers, the charger, data cable and of course the handset itself. You see the Wave for the first time and it exceeds all expectations, it looks stunning. It’s made mostly of brushed aluminium which looks and feels amazing. Even the plastic looks good.
Dominating the front of the device is a generously sized 3.3″ WVGA display, but this isn’t your bog standard TFT screen, it’s actually a Super AMOLED screen. What does this mean? Said short, it allows colours to be emulated just as you see them in real life. Blacks are deep, bright colours really are bright. It’s one of the best displays I’ve ever seen.
Above the display is the speaker for your calls and also a front facing camera for video calling and the Samsung Logo.
Beneath the screen are three buttons, in the middle is the main menu button, it brings up the app menu (which happens to look nearly the same as the iPhone Home screen), on the left you get an answer call button which also brings up a list of calls. Finally, on the right you get the end call button, which also closes the current app.
On the left edge of the phone there is nothing but a volume rocker, it’s easy enough to use but lacks a satisfying click.
On top is a speaker, a 3.5mm headphone input, and a micro-USB port.
On the right is the lock button and a dedicated camera key that pushes half way to auto focus. The lock button also lacks a satisfying click. The microphone is situated at the bottom of the phone
On the back of the phone is the 5 megapixel camera and LED flash, both shaped like diamonds. The LED flash is very bright and the camera features auto focus and tap to focus. There is also a button on the back to release the battery cover.
Onto Bada itself. When you hit the unlock button you are met with a lock screen that contains the date and time and a message telling you to sweep to unlock.
When you unlock you are greeted by a home screen that looks very android like. At the bottom of the screen are three icons. Keypad, Contacts and Messages, these cant be moved or changed. There are three pages by default that you slide left and right to naviagte through, more pages appear when they’re full.

At the top is the widget icon that allows you to remove and rearrange widgets. Widgets include, BBC iPlayer, Birthdays, Buddies Now and Samsung Apps. Our favourite widget was Buddies Now, it allows you to add contacts you want to a scrollable wheel which we found makes it easier to find more important people.
The status bar at the top of the screen pulls down to reveal quick access to WIFI, Bluetooth and Silent Mode, it also displays notifications such as emails and text messages.
The browser within Bada seems to be very quick at loading pages, and uses the 1GHZ CPU effeciently. Pinch to zoom also seems to be smoother than on Android. The email app in Bada supports, Exchange, Google, Yahoo, Hotmail or you can manually choose your own.
The camera app seemed easy to use and fairly comprehensive, you can chose from a range of scenes, effects, ISO settings and can chose to have flash on/off or auto. It also supports touch to focus
Samsung Apps, Samsung’s rival to Apple’s App Store and Android’s App Market, doesn’t have nearly the amount of apps as its competitors but it provides an easy to use interface and a range of useful apps of which a good amount are free.
Overall we really like this device, it’s build quality is fantastic and Bada OS seems like a hybrid of iOS and Android. We hope Samsung Apps recieves more apps, then this really could become a killer OS and a killer phone. However if you’re an app maniac your best off sticking with Android and iOS until Bada becomes a more deadly rival.
However if you’re an early adopter of this phone or the OS you won’t be disspointed.

Nokia N8 user review
First day with the N8 and has been some good times and irritating ones.
THE UPS: on my roller coaster ride were its pretty fast to react to you, maybe 3 times faster than my 5800 and gives you more confidence and speed. The menus seem to be faster to navigate due to removed double clicks. I had to use my nail only on the 5800 but this will not work so well with n8. It is happier with a soft finger podge so get your index nail trimmed off lol. The camera seems pretty good but its preset to 9mp and needed changing to 12 for max resolution. It was easy to start a transfer of items from my 5800 but locked up and turned itself off halfway through. The multiple displays all switch smoothly from one to the next but might seem a little bare until you get stuck into apps when they arrive.
THE DOWNS: is the body has a bad fitting top cap so its flush on the right but leaves a gap big enough for my nail (or dirt etc) to go down on the top left. It also leaves a pointy protruding hook like edge which is going to catch on any clothing thats loosly woven. I might phone vodafone to check its not a rare thing but know other users have spotted this aswell so cant comment if yours will be like this out of the box As mentioned it had locked up on me once hopefully the next firmware will be along soon. It seems you can either have packet data ‘always connected’ eating battery but choose wifi on internet start-up or turn it to ‘wlan only’ to save power but ‘packet data’ is then removed from options on opening the browser. This means I have to keep changing the main settings when im out and about and back again when home, requiring going offline and online again to disconnect the packet data. If you select packet data ‘when needed’ as I have done right back to my n95 it used to shut it of but this n8 turns it on and stays connected just incase its needed defeating the point? Also some of the apps like social network only seem to want to work on the network not wifi but maybe iv missed a setting. The predictive text is the worst iv tried and wont cycle through every combination of letters. if you press e r m as in ‘erm’ it just say fro?spell. its the same with two letters like UV, it says TV TU VU spell?. I Hope this will learn words ok but dont remember doing this with my old nokias. Of course you can portrait full qwerty but requires full attention to hit the smaller ‘keys’ and kills any chance of multi tasking with the tv.

THE LEVEL: Overall if iv not mentioned it it probably works well but just thought id point out the obvious bad areas as a warning to picky people expecting that the release delays means its perfect. It still feels 30 percent incomplete like when I first got a vista laptop and was ever so slightly deflated from the lack of wow factor I was expecting from the OS. I will be keeping this as im a nokia follower and know it should improve with updates but this might grate on some non nokia customers or people with higher expectations of quality for your £400. 30% of the reason for choosing the N8 was the great camera and so far looks like that part has paid off nicely. Movies on the screen look great, sounds very clear but maybe a bit tinny the highest pitched/squeal message alert tone made my ears hurt. Hdmi out to my 50 inch lg should be good when I try it. SMS conversation layout is great to help with my memory after a bang on the head a few years back, displaying your texts like an msn conversation almost. Web browser is 5 times faster than my 5800 and better thought out in functioning so thats good if your used to a very poor one that turns itself off everytime the wifi cuts out. Ok the maps are free and worked with my old 8gb memory card instantly preloaded but all the games are demos so you will need to download/buy some for the train journeys. Some of my s60 games seem to have installed when I inserted my old 5800 card and 2 out of 3 seem to work solitaire, chess and labyrinth etc so if its a bit lacking in support you could try these s60 ones for now. Some people had problems with the earphones with integrated buttons not working perfectly but you just need to press the plug in harder than you might like to until it clicks and means your protective cover will have to come off if you have one with a small hole. Once you have done that you find out the headphones are like 6 mosquitos climbed in your ears to play the tunes and cannot be changed via the main lead. You will have to lose the buttons and plug your standard headphones directly into the n8 I believe this is also the handsfree as it has a small mic hole and a phone button but have not used this function. Everytime I know there should be a baseline it just goes dull for a moment, and the higher notes are clear but sound like the driver unit is made of cigarette papers. The sim card contacts are the smallest iv ever seen and wouldnt recognise my old dented contacts on the sim untill I cleaned it and ejected it a few times while off.
THE END OF THE RIDE: This all sounds so bad but it feels good to hold/use, it seems to function well as a phone (another 30% why I bought it believe it or not) is heading for 24 hours battery use on the manic first day on the first charge. Im sure this will improve some once I put it down more often and the battery has a few cycles. It said full charge after an hr I ignored this and it said it again 30 minutes later maybe due to the phone not having chance to calibrate itself until you do a full battery cycle. Signal seems to jump around allot and is ok most of the time but seems to suffer much worse when cupped in hands than my 5800 did. As soon as its out your pocket and up by your head though its good to go in any area. It includes a dictionary, zip app, pdf reader and quick office so this phone isnt all play but i think they have just sprinkled it with a bit of everything letting you decide whats best to install. Doesnt seem to play the mpeg music videos already on my sd card but is happy with my avi files which seems the reverse of what I expected. I have just noticed when I upload a 544×1280 mp4 blue ray rip via the usb cable windows 7 asks if I want to convert the files or just try to copy only. The 2.5gb film wont display and the conversion says it will take maybe 5 hrs perhaps its best to convert bigger videos with another program as im not hanging around for that. A 680×320 played fine and looks amazing always self cropping out black bars so you see the full video area but if you try to skip at all the sounds drops out and I had to restart the film. Early days yet but should be a way around these things.
DO YOU QUE UP FOR A GO: My star ratings are more what I expect the average user to think after the first 12 hours with the phone if they have the same issues as me. I Think from here on in it will only grow on me. Im stupidly patient, easily pleased and would have marked a little higher if the world was full of my clones with as much time and money on their hands as me. I love the concept and the good selection of connectivity like hdmi, direct memory stick access and fm transmitter etc. If your very busy you may not have time for all the tinkering to get your head around the niggly issues. My reasons for buying were 30%phone 30%camera 20% multi-media device so far making me 80% satisfied and 20% a little frustrated
Ps when I say id recommend to a friend it would be the more gadgety friends with big tvs that understand we are paying to be product guinea pigs than the people who expect/need less features and want it working 100% out of the box

Nokia X6 user review
At first, I found this phone very confusing and difficult to use as it was my first touch screen phone. However, after a little bit of practice it has become second nature and it is unlikely that I would go back to a button only phone.
The touch screen feature is very clever. For most applications, two touches are required to ensure that things are not selected incorrectly, and the phone vibrates slightly to confirm that something has been selected.

The main camera is very impressive, though the secondary camera is quite inferior and has less definition.
My main niggle with this phone is that occasionally, the screen freezes, particularly when using the internet. During this time, the touch screen does not respond. This is fixed by closing whatever you were doing.
However, overall, the sheer amount of features and ease of use completely outweigh the minor issues. The phone itself is quite large compared to other touch screens, but if you don’t mind this, then I definitely recommend this phone.

Samsung i9000 Galaxy user review
I have to admit, when I walked into the shop to get my upgrade I was not going to buy this phone. I knew it existed and it was on the radar but I was after an HTC desire as I have had the G1 almost since it was released. Android was a must in my mind.
My first impression on seeing the phone was that it looks really smart, but the build quality looks fairly poor. This is entirely down to the very thin plastic that makes up the case. As I work on the railway and building sites, this was a huge concern for me.
The next thing I noticed is the superb screen. The colour clarity and picture definition is absolutely superb – which you would expect from the super-amoled screen. (Exactly what this meant I wasn’t sure, but it seems that the benefits over first generation amoled can be stated as: 20% brighter screen; 80% less sunlight reflection; 20% reduced power consumption.) The multitouch screen is very responsive, and the pinch to zoom that seems to becoming a standard makes internet browsing a dream.
The great things about android phones (of which this is one) for me is the integration to google and social networking sites, and the android app store. Having a google account already meant that I could download all my contacts to my phone without having to worry about transferring them from my old phone. In addition you can link (amongst other profiles) facebook and twitter profiles to you contacts. As far as the app store is concerned, it is very similar to the apple store in terms of content. The main difference seems to be that more of the useful apps and games are free on the android store.
The phone (currently) ships with android version 2.1 but Samsung have confirmed that 2.2 will be available by the end of September. I was also told by a sales team that this phone is the only one on the market today that will definitely be getting android 3.0 in the future. This is one of the points that sold it to me to be honest, so I hope this turns out to be true.
The next clincher for me was that this phone has the ability to act as a wifi hotspot – allowing me to browse the internet from my non-3g ipad or a laptop.
There are a few annoyances however. If you have sorted you google contact list into groups, these are not synced with the phone. On top of that, all google contacts are lumped into one group and it would seem that all these google contacts can not then be added to other groups. But this is a minor gripe. Battery life can seem pretty poor too. If I use it as a phone only, with all extra services off I can easily get 2 days out of it – but then what is the point in having a fancy phone at all? With pretty heavy use of the internet, social networking services and the gps I can barely get 8 hours – but then what phone these days can?
Having owned the phone now for about 5/6 weeks I am really happy with it. The galaxy s offers much improvement over my original android phone and this impulse purchase has paid off. If you can put up with the flimsy plastic and the need to keep a charger close then I would higly recommend this phone. It looks great and I have yet to find anything that makes me regret buying it.
